ASTM G155 addresses xenon arc exposure of nonmetallic materials. Xenon arc equipment is used to reproduce important aspects of natural sunlight while also allowing defined temperature, moisture, and water-spray conditions.

The method may be used to investigate changes such as fading, color shift, gloss loss, cracking, and other forms of surface degradation.

 

ISO 4892-2 covers the exposure of plastics to xenon arc radiation. It can be used for comparative evaluations of plastic materials, coatings, and polymer-based products under controlled laboratory conditions.

FLUORESCENT UV EXPOSURE FOR PLASTICS

ISO 4892-3 addresses the exposure of plastics using fluorescent UV lamps.

Does ASTM G155 Replace Natural Outdoor Weathering?

The two approaches provide different types of data

An ASTM G155 exposure can provide valuable information about the weatherability of a nonmetallic material under controlled xenon arc conditions.

However, it does not automatically reproduce every interaction that occurs during natural outdoor exposure. Real climates include changing solar intensity, seasonal variation, rain patterns, pollutants, dew formation, and other environmental factors.

ASTM G155 and natural weathering should therefore not always be treated as interchangeable. A combined program may be appropriate when laboratory results need to be compared with real-world exposure.


When Is a Florida Weathering Test Recommended?

Hot-humid exposure for demanding service environments

A Florida weathering test can be useful when a material is intended for warm and humid regions or when the combined effects of strong sunlight, heat, moisture, and rainfall need to be evaluated.

Florida outdoor exposure can also provide reference data for accelerated xenon arc or UV weathering methods.

The appropriate duration and exposure setup depend on the material, product application, and performance requirement.


Which Weathering Standards Are Relevant to Automotive Materials?

The correct method depends on the component and customer requirement

Frequently referenced methods include SAE J2527 and SAE J1960 for exterior materials and SAE J2412 for interior materials.

Depending on the material and application, ASTM G155, ASTM D7869, ISO 4892-2, and ISO 4892-3 may also be relevant.

The applicable standard, test cycle, and acceptance criteria should be confirmed against the current customer, OEM, or project-specific specification before testing begins.


How Long Does Outdoor Weathering Testing Take?

Exposure duration depends on the material and test objective

Outdoor exposure programs may range from several months to multiple years.

The appropriate duration depends on:

    • Material type
    • Target climate
    • Intended service life
    • Expected degradation mechanism
    • Customer specification
    • Required performance threshold

Periodic evaluations can reveal early differences between materials before the full exposure period has been completed.

 

Can Accelerated Test Hours Be Converted Into Years of Outdoor Use?

A universal conversion factor is generally not reliable

There is usually no universal formula that converts a specific number of accelerated test hours into an exact number of years in service.

The relationship depends on the material, product geometry, exposure climate, test method, radiation spectrum, temperature, moisture cycles, and degradation mechanism.

A more reliable approach is to compare accelerated results with natural exposure data and defined performance criteria.
