IDENTIFY CORROSION
RISKS EARLY
Automotive components are exposed to moisture, road salt, temperature changes, condensation, and chemicals throughout their service life.
Corrosion testing helps you:
- Evaluate the resistance of metals and coatings
- Identify coating defects and weak points
- Compare materials, suppliers, and production processes
- Verify customer and OEM requirements
- Reduce quality, warranty, and field failure risks
- Support material and component qualification
SALT SPRAY TESTING
During salt spray testing, specimens are exposed to a controlled saline atmosphere inside a corrosion chamber.
The test is suitable for:
- Coated and uncoated metals
- Painted and plated surfaces
- Fasteners and brackets
- Connectors and housings
- Automotive interior and exterior components
- Complete assemblies
Typical evaluations include red rust, white corrosion, blistering, delamination, discoloration, coating breakdown, and corrosion creepage from a scribe.
CYCLIC CORROSION TESTING
Real-world corrosion exposure is rarely constant. Components are typically subjected to alternating periods of salt, humidity, drying, and temperature changes.
Cyclic corrosion testing reproduces these changing environmental conditions through defined and repeatable test cycles.
This method is especially suitable for:
- Complete components and assemblies
- Mixed-material constructions
- Coated systems
- Joints, edges, and fasteners
- Customer-specific automotive validation programs

STANDARDS-BASED
AUTOMOTIVE CORROSION TESTING
ASTM B117 SALT SPRAY TESTING
ASTM B117 describes the apparatus, procedures, and operating conditions required to create and maintain a controlled salt spray or salt fog environment.
The standard is widely used for testing metals and coated metallic specimens. However, ASTM B117 does not independently define the appropriate exposure duration, specimen type, or product-specific acceptance criteria. These requirements must be established through the relevant product specification, drawing, customer requirement, or validation plan.
ASTM B117 testing can support:
- Coating process validation
- Comparative quality control
- Supplier qualification
- Investigation of coating defects
- Production monitoring
- Customer-specific validation programs
Because standalone salt spray results do not automatically predict real-world service life, the test should always be selected and interpreted in relation to the intended application and applicable product requirements.
ISO 9227 SALT SPRAY TESTING
ISO 9227 specifies the equipment, reagents, and procedures used for different salt spray test methods.
These include:
- NSS – Neutral Salt Spray
- AASS – Acetic Acid Salt Spray
- CASS – Copper-Accelerated Acetic Acid Salt Spray
ISO 9227 can be used for metallic materials with or without permanent or temporary corrosion protection. It is particularly useful for identifying discontinuities such as pores and other defects in metallic, organic, anodic oxide, and conversion coatings.
The standard itself does not define the specimen dimensions, exposure time, or acceptance criteria for a specific product. These parameters must be taken from the relevant product or customer specification.
PV 1210 CORROSION TESTING
imat performs corrosion test programs according to PV 1210 based on the applicable customer specification and required revision.
Before testing begins, our specialists review all relevant parameters, including:
- Required test cycle
- Number of cycles
- Specimen preparation
- Sample positioning
- Scribing requirements
- Inspection intervals
- Evaluation methods
- Acceptance criteria
- Required documentation
Please provide the applicable version of PV 1210 together with the component drawing or validation requirement when requesting a quotation.
GMW14872 CYCLIC CORROSION TESTING
Testing according to GMW14872 is used for customer-specific automotive corrosion validation programs that require alternating environmental conditions.
Depending on the applicable specification and component requirements, the program may include salt exposure, humidity, drying, ambient phases, inspections, and defined cycle repetitions.
imat reviews the current GMW14872 revision and your project-specific requirements before confirming the final test setup.
BMW AA-0324 CORROSION TESTING
imat also supports corrosion testing according to BMW AA-0324, where required by the applicable drawing, material specification, validation plan, or customer requirement.
Testing is configured using the current specification provided for the project. This ensures that sample preparation, exposure conditions, inspection points, and evaluation criteria correspond to the exact component requirements.
FROM SAMPLE TO TEST REPORT
1. REQUIREMENTS REVIEW
We review the applicable standard, component geometry, coating system, test duration, and evaluation criteria.
2. SAMPLE PREPARATION
Samples are cleaned, conditioned, mounted, masked, or scribed as required by the specification.
3. CONTROLLED EXPOSURE
The specimens are exposed according to the defined salt spray or cyclic corrosion program.
4. EVALUATION AND REPORTING
Results are documented through photographs, written findings, ratings, measurements, and pass/fail assessments where required.
WHY CHOOSE IMAT FOR CORROSION TESTING?

MORE THAN EXPOSURE: CLEAR AND USEFUL RESULTS
A corrosion chamber generates the required environment. Reliable validation, however, requires much more than placing a component inside the chamber.
A professional test program must consider:
- Correct specimen preparation
- Defined cleaning procedures
- Suitable positioning and orientation
- Controlled solution quality
- Stable chamber conditions
- Accurate cycle control
- Defined inspection intervals
- Consistent evaluation criteria
- Traceable documentation
Our goal is not simply to expose your samples. We provide structured test data that supports development, quality assurance, supplier management, and technical decision-making.
Exposure tests give us the opportunity to make the future measurable. Because sustainable quality begins where products not only impress today, but also stand the test of time tomorrow.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT
CORROSION TESTING
Salt spray testing is an accelerated laboratory method in which specimens are exposed to a controlled saline fog. It is used to identify corrosion behavior, coating defects, and weaknesses in metallic materials, protective coatings, and components.
Continuous salt spray testing maintains a defined salt fog environment. Cyclic corrosion testing alternates between conditions such as salt exposure, humidity, drying, and temperature changes.
The appropriate method depends on the product, material system, customer requirement, and intended validation objective.
A salt spray test should not be directly converted into a specific number of years in real-world service. ASTM B117 states that correlation and extrapolation to natural environments are not always predictable without suitable supporting field exposure data.
Salt spray testing is most useful for controlled qualification, quality monitoring, process comparisons, and detecting coating or manufacturing defects.
Yes, depending on component dimensions, weight, required orientation, chamber capacity, and the applicable specification. Testing complete components can reveal corrosion risks at fasteners, joints, cut edges, contact points, drainage areas, and mixed-material interfaces.
Depending on the test specification, evaluation can include:
- Red rust
- White corrosion
- Blistering
- Delamination
- Creepage from a scribe
- Coating breakdown
- Discoloration
- Surface changes
- Corrosion at edges and joints
- Functional impairment
The required evaluation criteria should be defined before the test begins.
